Artist Reaserch

Jaune Quick-To-See Smith

Jaune Quick-To-See Smith is an artist who does pencil drawings and paintings. Her paintings in my opinion, look kind of dream-like. I'm not sure what the art style is called, but to me the boat painting looks like a collage of different colours each with a different part of the picture in them, almost like a jigsaw.

The technique she used is wet on wet you can tell this from to the runny, sort of smudged look. However she has done pencil drawings as well. Her use of colour with the heart painting is interesting, there are a lot of bright colours but the heart stands out the most with the glowing effect. I'm not 100% sure what the painting means, but it seems like someone who was a large heart (figuratively) is going through a tough time which I think is symbolised by the ants.

I like how the heart stands out, it's very eye-catching. This relates to my game plot-wise because the main character is a good person however something is holding him back.

Kananginak Pootoogook

Kananginak Pootoogook was a sculpture and artist from Canada. His artwork is very simplistic and mostly focused on the bird life in the Arctic as well as hunting scenes. He has used various styles in his time such as; stone-cut, etching, copper engraving and stencil just to name a few. He gained an interest in the Inuit tribes within the Arctic and so captured their culture through his art.

I this drawing there are three owls; one sitting down, the other two standing up one facing sideways. I don't believe that there is a particular meaning to this drawing. He used coloured pencils and graphite on paper. The colours were pretty bland and not very bright. This creates a simple, flat, uncompleted 2D image. Personally, I like his work, it's not too complicated and it doesn't need to be which to me, makes them more visually appealing. I really like the simplistic style of his drawings, a style I intend to use in my project.

Fritz Scholder

Fritz Scholder was a member of the Luiseno tribe however he often stated that he was not Indian. He was an abstract expressionist artist. He did oil paintings expressing how he feels we see red Indians. You can tell that he has used watercolour with the purple horse painting; the horse's rump is red, however you can see the purple underneath. I'm not sure if this piece of art has any particular meaning it's a man with a hat riding a horse. I'm not sure why but just looking at this picture reminds  me of Wylie Coyote chasing Road Runner, which takes me back to my childhood. I remember that cartoon being fun, and I would like to add that element to my game whilst also keeping a serious element to it as well.

The image is done using dark colours with a bright background, this makes it stand out. I like his use of shading with this it makes it look 3D without the use of lines, an effect I hope to also use shading in my game to give a 3D look to the characters. Colour mixing elements have been used as well, you can tell this from the way the colours blend together.

Ernie Pepion

Ernie Pepion was a artist and storyteller. He was a member of the Blackfeet tribe, and would tell stories about people with disabilities through his artwork. I'm not sure what materials he used to create this piece of art. I don't think there was any technique used however it does look good. There are three teepees in this painting each drawn with different colours to make them stand out from each other. I am using a teepee in my game so this can be good for reference.

The stories he would tell were of both pain and joy, he would sometimes put both emotions in the same picture. He was a quadriplegic, meaning he couldn't use his arms or legs he could only use his mouth and he used it to create his art and tell his stories. This picture of the three teepees was drawn on some sort of list. It could be a register, it could be a birth certificate it could be anything.

Stephen Mopope

Stephen Mopope was a Kiowa Artist and a feather dancer who did pencil drawings and paintings. I believe he used ink to create this piece of art. I'm not sure what materials he used to create this piece of art. I don't think there was any particular technique used. However he did these paintings to reflect on himself as a Kiowa artist and a feather dancer, which is what they are doing in the picture. I like the design of the clothes, and this can help me with designing my character.

Stephen Mopope was first taught art by his great uncles. His main focus with his art was portrait scenes, with mystical, lyrical, almost poetic themes. I'm not a big fan of poetry, however the idea for my game deferentially has a few mystical elements to it. So this can could help to influence the mechanics of my game.

Project Proposal

Candidate
Name
Henry Coller
Candidate Number

Pathway

UAL Level 3 Extended Games Design and Development
Project Title
FMP

Section 1: Review (Approx 150 words)
My FMP is a game on Construct called A Shaman’s Quest it is about a young man who goes out on a quest to seek out whatever is bringing him down holding him back. But while he’s out there, he finds himself going through several physical and spiritual changes. I am hoping to at least make a four level game with challenges throughout and that can probably teach people a bit about Native American culture. I have learned quite a bit about Native American culture myself so far and what I have learned has inspired some creativity in my work.

Section 2: Project Concept (Approx 250 words)
The idea for my FMP partly came from my fondness of wolves, I know for my FMP I am going to do something wolf related and in native American culture the wolf is considered a teacher, and my game should kind of teach players about native Americans. In fact, a wolf will be the first thing you become. I am going to research into Totem animals and what each one means and then find a way to put that into my game. I am hoping to meet with two native Americans to learn more and hopefully get some useful information.

Section 3: Evaluation (Approx 100 words)
I am going to first do some initial sketches on paper of possible animals I could use in my game. Such as a wolf, a snake, a buffalo, an owl etc. Then I intend to draw some on Photoshop and then put them in the game. I will make the game on Construct 2 and it will be a 2D side-scroller plat former, adventure game.

Once my game is completed, I intended to play through it several times as I go to make sure that it is working the way I am happy with it and keep doing that with each level of the game. When the game is finished I would like to add some kind of music to make it seem like a proper computer game. If I encounter any issues I shall type them onto my blog and try as many times as it takes to solve them, and I will add how I solved them to the blog as well as everything else I do whilst making the game.

Initial Sketches

This is an experimental drawing of a red Indian. a study from internet research. I wanted to create a concept design of the main character of the game, using shading to show detail and give it a more complete look.

This is an experimental drawing of a totem pole. a study from internet research. I wanted to understand the structure of a totem pole in the hope of developing one of my own design to put into the game. I used a bit of shading for the design of the pole.

This is the final design for the totem pole that I am going to put into the game. a study from my previous
design.
I wanted to make the pole suit the animals I'm going to use. I didn't use any particular
technique for this one.

This is an experimental drawing of a teepee.
study from internet research. I wanted to create
a simple teepee to put into the game. I used a bit
of shading for the design at the bottom and top
of the teepee and for the folds in the fabric

This is the first story board I made for my game. I wanted to create a basic understanding of how my game was going to work (for my original idea which I intend to develop further)

This is an updated version of my story board a study from my previous design. for this I wanted to create a more detailed illustration of what will happen in the game.

This is an experimental drawing of a wolf, one of the animals I intend to use in my game. a study from internet research and physical interaction with them. I wanted to create some concept art / character design,
using a lot of shading to show detail in the fur and shadow to give it a more realistic look.

These are experimental drawings of an owl, and a butterfly two more of the animals I intend to use in my game. a study from internet research and physical interaction with them. I wanted to create some concept art / character design, using a lot of shading and smudging to show detail in the feathers and shadow for the owl and the detail on the body and wings of the butterfly to give them a more realistic look.
These are experimental drawings of a snake and a bison. the snake I am deferentially going to use in my game the bison I'm not sure about.
a study from internet research and physical interaction with them.

I wanted to create some concept art / character design, using a lot of shading and smudging to show detail in the feathers and shadow for the owl and the detail on the body and wings of the butterfly to give them a more realistic look.

This is an observational drawing from a photograph I took of a teepee during my trip to France. (the person coming out of it is supposed to be me :/) I want to use this to gain a better understanding of how a teepee is built. I used a bit of shading for the grass around the teepee and for the folds in the fabric.

These are observational drawings from photographs I took during my trip to France. these drawings are of a bison skull which was hanging on the wall in a shop, and one of those feather hats which was in a display case at the entrance of the hotel I want to use this to learn how to draw one of these hats for my character.

Photographs

These are some photographs I took during my trip to Disney land Paris. These are some Indian feather hats near the entrance.

This is a statue of a bear I found in the hotel.

This is the entrance to the play area for kids in the hotel next door (If I look uninterested, it's because we did a lot of walking and I was tired)

This is a canoe hanging above the entrance to the breakfast area in the hotel

The pattern on this desk caught my eye and has given me an idea on Indian art style.

This is a carpet  in the reception area in the hotel.

This was a little display piece I found in a gift shop.

These are some teepees I found around the corner from the hotel, I did not build them. One was fully assembled, the other was partly.
